It is right now that the indicators determining the commercial value of the produce are laid down: fruit weight, taste, color, firmness, shelf life, and transportability. Even with a well-formed vegetative mass, errors in nutrition at the final stage can cost a significant part of the yield.

During this period, the plant gradually changes its priorities. If earlier the main resources were directed to the formation of the leaf apparatus and root system, now most of the plastic substances move to the fruits, root crops, or heads. Therefore, the nutrition system should be aimed not at stimulating new growth, but at maximizing high-quality filling and dry matter accumulation.

One of the most common mistakes is the continued application of high doses of nitrogen. An excess of this element at the end of vegetation stimulates the formation of new shoots and leaves, which begin to compete with the fruits for nutrients. As a result, ripening is delayed, fruits become less firm, store worse, and the content of dry matter and sugars decreases. Nitrogen at this stage should arrive only in an amount sufficient to maintain active photosynthesis, but without excessive stimulation of vegetative growth.

Instead, the role of potassium increases significantly. It is responsible for transporting carbohydrates to the fruits, sugar accumulation, dry matter synthesis, color, aroma, and product firmness. Sufficient potassium nutrition also increases plant resistance to heat and short-term drought, and reduces the risk of fruit cracking after moisture fluctuations. For complex plant nutrition during the ripening period, we recommend using Makosh 10-20-30 fertilizer; for potassium nutrition, you can use Solucros Potassium Sulfate.

Calcium remains no less important. It is often underestimated, because deficiency symptoms can appear even with sufficient element content in the soil. The reason lies in the low mobility of calcium inside the plant. In hot weather or with uneven watering, young fruits may experience its shortage, which leads to the development of blossom end rot in tomatoes and peppers, internal necrosis in brassica crops, and deterioration of vegetable shelf life. Regular calcium feedings (root and foliar) help minimize these risks. To provide plants with calcium and small doses of nitrogen, DUSLO Calcium Nitrate should be used.

Micronutrients also demonstrate high efficiency during the filling period:

Boron improves sugar translocation, supports cell wall formation, and promotes uniform fruit development.
Makosh B11

Zinc participates in enzymatic processes and helps plants tolerate heat stress more easily.
Makosh Zn 8

Iron provides intensive photosynthesis, and manganese supports the operation of the photosynthetic apparatus and enzyme synthesis.

Even a minor deficiency of these elements in the second half of the growing season can limit plant productivity.

Special attention should be paid to magnesium. It is the central element of the chlorophyll molecule, so the intensity of photosynthesis directly depends on its supply. If the leaves turn yellow prematurely, the plant loses its ability to produce assimilates faster, which negatively affects fruit filling. Maintaining an active leaf apparatus until the end of vegetation allows maximizing the yield potential, so during the ripening period we continue feeding with INTERSAC Magnesium Sulfate for intensive fruit filling.

A proper water regime is equally important. Even ideally balanced nutrition will not always provide the desired result without a stable supply of moisture. Sharp fluctuations in soil moisture impair the absorption of calcium, boron, and potassium, contribute to fruit cracking, and reduce product quality. The best result is provided by uniform moistening of the root zone without prolonged drying out or overwatering of the root-containing soil layer.

During ripening, it is especially important not to work by a “template.” Hot weather, sharp temperature drops, intensive fruiting, or a high yield load can significantly change crop needs. Regular inspection of plants, assessment of the leaf apparatus condition, and timely correction of the nutrition system allow avoiding hidden element deficiencies that often remain unnoticed until harvest time.

The final weeks of vegetation determine what the final result of the farmer’s work will be. Balanced provision of potassium, calcium, magnesium, and micronutrients, moderate nitrogen nutrition, and a stable water supply help obtain not only a high yield, but also produce with high taste qualities, market presentation, and a long storage period. It is at the finish line that we shape the quality that the consumer is ready to pay for.

The period of fruit filling and ripening is one of the most critical stages in the technology of growing vegetable crops.
