Corn is lagging in growth: how to find the cause and help the plants

Corn is a vital crop for Ukrainian farms, but even with the correct cultivation technology, farmers regularly face a problem – corn lagging in growth. This situation can occur both in the early stages of development – from seedling emergence to the formation of 5-7 leaves, and during the period of active crop vegetation. Part of the plants grows actively, while certain areas of the field lag noticeably behind in development. If the cause is determined in time, the situation can still be corrected and yield losses minimized. Let’s look at the main factors that can restrain corn growth and ways to eliminate them.

To begin with, it is necessary to determine the scale of the problem:

  • Individual plants are lagging behind;

  • Specific areas of the field are problematic;

  • Suppressed development is observed throughout the entire field.

This will help narrow down the scope of possible causes. If individual plants are lagging or specific areas of the field are problematic, it is often associated with soil compaction, uneven fertility, or pest damage. If the lag is observed across the entire field, you should pay attention to weather conditions, nutrition, or technological errors.

Low Soil Temperature

Corn is a thermophilic (heat-loving) crop. Even with sufficient moisture and nutrients, cold soil significantly slows down the development of the root system. One of the most common reasons for corn lagging in the seedling and 3-6 leaf phases is low soil temperature. At low temperatures, roots work inefficiently, causing the plant to absorb water and nutrients poorly. As a result, corn spends energy not on growth, but on overcoming stress. This manifests as slow development, weak accumulation of vegetative mass, and general suppression of plants, which ultimately reduces yield.

Phosphorus Deficiency

Phosphorus is an element that is critically important at the initial stages of development, as it is responsible for:

  • Development of the root system;

  • Energy metabolism;

  • Formation of reproductive organs;

  • Early start of the crop.

Most often, its deficiency manifests itself precisely in the 4-5 leaf phase, when the demand for phosphorus is maximum. In case of deficiency, the color of the leaves changes first — a purple tint appears, starting from the edges of the leaf blade and gradually spreading to the entire leaf and the rest of the vegetative mass. At the same time, growth retardation is observed, plants look suppressed, and lower leaves may die prematurely.

To support plants, it is recommended to use foliar feeding containing accessible forms of phosphorus that stimulate root system development. Such treatments are especially effective in the 4-6 leaf phase, when the future yield potential of the crop is being established.

Zinc Deficiency

Corn is one of the most sensitive crops to zinc deficiency. That is why a shortage of this microelement often causes suppressed growth even on fertile soils. Most often, the problem arises on calcareous soils, at high pH levels, after applying significant rates of phosphorus fertilizers, or in conditions of a cool spring. The most effective solution to eliminate the deficiency is foliar feeding with zinc-containing fertilizers, such as Makosh Zn 8, in the 4-6 leaf phase. It is during this period that corn has the highest demand for zinc. Timely application allows for quick restoration of photosynthesis processes, stimulates root system growth, and improves nitrogen utilization by the plant.

Nitrogen Deficiency

Nitrogen is the main element that determines the intensity of growth and the formation of the leaf surface of corn. With its deficiency, plants acquire a light green or yellowish color, lower leaves begin to turn yellow from the tip along the central vein, and the development of the crop slows down noticeably. Nitrogen starvation occurs especially often after heavy rainfall, when the nitrate form of nitrogen is leached into lower soil horizons. The problem can also be observed after incorporating a large amount of crop residues, when soil microorganisms actively consume available nitrogen for their decomposition.

To confirm nitrogen deficiency, it is advisable to assess the state of crops and take into account the weather conditions of recent weeks. If the cause of the growth lag is precisely nitrogen starvation, it is necessary to provide plants with accessible forms of nitrogen. The most effective solution is soil fertilization with nitrogen fertilizers before predicted rainfall or during inter-row cultivation, which allows delivering the element to the zone of active root system development.

Soil Compaction

Even with sufficient moisture and nutrient supply, corn can lag in growth due to soil compaction. Most often, the problem arises as a result of repeated passage of machinery or the formation of a plow pan. The root system cannot penetrate into deeper layers of the soil, which limits access to water and nutrients. As a result, plants become less resistant to drought and sudden temperature changes. For diagnostics, it is enough to dig up several plants. If the roots develop horizontally or sharply change the direction of growth at a certain depth, this may indicate the presence of a compacted layer.

If the problem is detected already during the growing season, it will be almost impossible to completely eliminate the compacted soil layer in the current season. Therefore, the main task here is to maximize support for the root system and reduce stress for the plants. For this, it is important to provide corn with accessible elements of nutrition. First of all, with phosphorus and zinc, which stimulate root development and improve moisture absorption. It is also advisable to use foliar feeding with anti-stress components, amino acids, and microelements, which help plants maintain active growth even with limited root system development.

Herbicide Stress

Another cause of corn growth suppression can be herbicide stress. It manifests itself especially often after sharp temperature changes, excessive rainfall, or the use of complex tank mixes. Symptoms can include slowed growth, leaf curling, temporary yellowing, or deformation of young plants.

In most cases, corn is able to recover on its own after weather conditions normalize. However, to accelerate recovery, it is advisable to use anti-stress foliar feeding.

The lag of corn in growth can be caused by various factors: low soil temperature, deficiency of phosphorus, zinc, or nitrogen, soil compaction, herbicide stress, or damage to the root system by pests or diseases. In most cases, the problem is complex, so to establish the exact cause, it is important to evaluate not only external symptoms but also the state of the root system, weather conditions, agrochemical soil indicators, and the crop nutrition system.

Timely diagnosis and rapid elimination of deficiencies allow minimizing yield losses and helping plants fully realize their potential.
