Corn is lagging behind in growth. How to find the cause and help the plants?

Corn is an important crop for Ukrainian farms, but even with proper cultivation technology, farmers regularly face a problem — corn lagging behind in growth. This situation can occur both in the early stages of development — from seedling emergence to the formation of 5–7 leaves — and during the period of active crop vegetation. Part of the plants grows actively, while certain areas of the field lag noticeably behind in development. If the cause is identified in a timely manner, the situation can still be corrected and yield losses minimized. Let’s consider the main factors that can restrain corn growth and ways to eliminate them.

To begin with, it is necessary to determine the scale of the problem:

  • individual plants are lagging behind;
  • problem individual areas of the field;
  • suppressed development is observed across the entire field.

This will help narrow down the range of possible causes. If individual plants or specific areas of the field lag behind, this is often associated with soil compaction, uneven fertility, or pest damage. If lagging is observed across the entire field, attention should be paid to weather conditions, nutrition, or technological errors.

Low soil temperature

Corn is a thermophilic crop. Even with sufficient moisture and nutrients, cold soil significantly slows down root system development. One of the most common causes of corn lagging behind in the emergence and 3–6 leaf stages is low soil temperature. At low temperatures, roots function inefficiently, as a result of which the plant absorbs water and nutrients worse. Consequently, corn spends energy not on growth, but on overcoming stress. This manifests as slow development, weak accumulation of vegetative mass, and general plant suppression, which ultimately reduces yields.

Phosphorus deficiency

Phosphorus is an element that is critically important in the starting stages of development, as it is responsible for:

  • root system development;
  • energy metabolism;
  • formation of generative organs;
  • early start of the crop.

Most often, its deficiency manifests precisely in the 4–5 leaf stage, when the demand for phosphorus is highest. With a deficiency, leaf coloration changes first — a purple hue appears, starting from the edges of the leaf blade and gradually spreading to the entire leaf and the rest of the vegetative mass. Simultaneously, growth delay is observed, plants look suppressed, and lower leaves may die off prematurely.

To support plants, it is recommended to use foliar feedings containing available forms of phosphorus that stimulate root system development. Such treatments are especially effective in the 4–6 leaf stage, when the future yield potential of the crop is established.

Zinc deficiency

Corn is one of the most sensitive crops to zinc deficiency. That is why a deficiency of this micronutrient often becomes the cause of suppressed growth even on fertile soils. Most often, the problem occurs on calcareous soils, at high pH levels, after applying significant rates of phosphorus fertilizers, or under cool spring conditions. The most effective solution to eliminate deficiency is foliar feeding with zinc-containing fertilizers Makosh Zn 8 in the 4–6 leaf stage. It is during this period that corn has the highest demand for zinc. Timely application allows quickly restoring photosynthesis processes, stimulating root system growth, and improving nitrogen utilization by the plant.

Nitrogen deficiency

Nitrogen is the main element that determines growth intensity and leaf surface formation in corn. With its deficiency, plants acquire a light green or yellowish color, lower leaves begin to yellow from the tip along the central vein, and crop development slows down noticeably. Nitrogen starvation occurs especially often after heavy rainfall, when the nitrate form of nitrogen is washed into lower soil horizons. Also, the problem can be observed after incorporating a large amount of crop residues, when soil microorganisms actively consume available nitrogen for their decomposition.

To confirm nitrogen deficiency, it is advisable to assess the condition of the crops and take into account the weather conditions of recent weeks. If nitrogen starvation is indeed the cause of lagging growth, it is necessary to provide plants with available forms of nitrogen. The most effective solution is soil application of nitrogen fertilizers before forecasted precipitation or during inter-row cultivation, which allows delivering the element to the active root development zone.

Soil compaction

Even with adequate provision of moisture and nutrients, corn can lag behind in growth due to soil compaction. Most often, the problem arises as a result of repeated machinery passes or hardpan formation. The root system cannot penetrate into deeper soil layers, limiting access to water and nutrients. As a result, plants become less resistant to drought and sharp temperature fluctuations. For diagnostics, it is sufficient to dig up a few plants. If the roots develop horizontally or sharply change growth direction at a certain depth, this may indicate the presence of a compacted layer.

If the problem is detected already during vegetation, completely eliminating the compacted soil layer in the current season will be almost impossible. Therefore, the main task here is to support the root system as much as possible and reduce stress for the plants. For this, it is important to provide corn with available nutrients. First of all, with phosphorus and zinc, which stimulate root development and improve moisture absorption. It is also advisable to use foliar feedings with anti-stress components, amino acids, and micronutrients, which help plants maintain active growth even with limited root system development.

Herbicide stress

Another cause of corn growth suppression can be herbicide stress. It manifests especially often after sharp temperature drops, excessive rainfall, or the use of complex tank mixes.

Symptoms may include growth slowness, leaf curling, temporary yellowing, or deformation of young plants.

In most cases, corn is able to recover on its own after weather conditions normalize. However, to accelerate recovery, it is advisable to use anti-stress foliar feedings.

Corn lagging behind in growth can be caused by various factors: low soil temperature, phosphorus, zinc, or nitrogen deficiency, soil compaction, herbicide stress, or damage to the root system by pests or diseases. In most cases, the problem is complex in nature, so to establish the exact cause, it is important to evaluate not only external symptoms, but also the condition of the root system, weather conditions, soil agrochemical parameters, and the crop nutrition system.

Timely diagnostics and prompt elimination of deficiencies allow minimizing yield losses and helping plants realize their potential to the maximum.
